Online Betting- Getting Started Guide

There are a few simple steps to take before you can place your first online bet.

  • Firstly, use our reviews and bonus guides to select the best SA online betting site for you. We only review licensed SA betting sites so you can be sure you are betting with the best!
  • Secondly, click on one of our links to take you to your chosen betting site. You can then enter some simple details like name, address and email address to complete the registration process.
  • Thirdly, you will be required to complete the ‘FICA’ verification process. This is a simple process that is required by law for all new accounts for all new bookmakers to prevent financial crime and money laundering. It is standard in South Africa and indeed many other countries and is very straightforward. More details on the FICA process are below.
  • You are then ready to make a deposit, claim your welcome bonus and get started!
FICA Process

In South Africa, the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) is a law which requires financial institutions, including online bookmakers, to verify the identity of their customers. This is standard procedure in most regulated betting markets and can usually be completed quickly and easily.

  • As part of the registration process, you will typically be asked to provide your ID. This could be in the form of your government issued ID card, a driver’s license or a passport. Most of the best SA betting sites allow you to upload a copy of your document via the website.
  • You may also need to provide proof of address. This could be in the form of a utility bill, a bank statement or an official letter displaying your address. Again, if requested, a copy of this document can usually be uploaded via the website.
  • As soon as you have submitted the required documentation, the bookmaker will begin verifying the documents, before confirming your account is activated. This process can be completed quickly so there is no major delay in placing your bet.

It may seem unusual to send your documents to an online bookmaker, but this is a legal requirement which the bookmakers must fulfil. Licensed bookmakers have a responsibility to abide by these laws to help keep crime out of gambling. They are also required to handle your data safely and securely and abide by all relevant privacy laws.

Deposits and Withdrawals

There are a wide range of deposit and withdrawal methods available to suit every player. These payment methods can be broken down into four main categories and will vary depending on the online betting site you choose to bet with;

  • Debit and Credit Cards – like Visa & Mastercard
  • Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT)
  • Direct Bank Transfer
  • Vouchers

Check out our Best Betting Sites to read our bookmaker reviews and understand the payment methods available at each.
